Example of a Health and Safety Upgrade on a Wastewater Wet Well Application
An existing inadequate flush fitting access cover, situated on a raised brick chamber, was condemned as unsafe for operatives and non-compliant with current health and safety regulations with its heavy cover lids, intermediate support beam and out-dated fall protection.
Through Technocovers Total Service philosophy, our experienced design team defined a safe and practical replacement upstand access cover solution along with efficient method of installation.
A detailed site survey and risk assessment was undertaken and this outlined the need to remove the top two layers of the existing raised brickwork taking it back to the original slab level prior to the installation of a new Technocover (SoloLift™) upstand wet well cover incorporating torsion sprung lids to facilitate safe single-person operation and guard against slamming when closing and full internal fall protection preventing the risk of operatives falling into the chamber during routine work or inspection.
The actual Technocover UltraSecure product installed was a twin leaf, end hinged, non-vented, wet well upstand access cover, with side frame acting as kick plate, complete with odour seal, ladder style fall protection, SoloLift™ spring assisted lids, auto safety stays, lever down locking and shrouded padlocking facilities, purpose designed to suit the existing 1280 mm x 1710 mm internal chamber clear opening. The full cover assembly was hot dip galvanized after manufacture to BS EN ISO 1461 to give a minimum design life of 25 years.
Site installation was by Technocovers trained fitting team who removed and disposed of the old cover, all rubble, bricks and other redundant materials from site once installation was complete.
In conclusion, this Technocover "Best Practice Solution" fulfilled client objectives by replacing an out-dated and unsafe access cover, one that failed to meet safe manual handling regulations and possessed inadequate fall protection, with a more cost effective upstand access cover that is fully manual handling compliant, utilises correct fall protection and has the added benefit of offering a higher level of security.
